The humanitarian mission of the ASL of Frosinone: a young refugee in Algeria rescued from blindness

A delicate intervention that has taken on an extraordinary dual value: health and humanitarian.

It is the one performed in recent weeks by the Neurosurgery UOC of Frosinone, directed by Dr. Giancarlo D’Andrea, on an 18-year-old boy, a refugee from the Sahara, a refugee in Algeria.

Thanks to an international agreement, mediated by the Ministry of Health, the Complex Operational Unit of the hospital received the request for humanitarian aid and immediately worked to assist the young Saharan.

The boy, suffering from disharmonious gigantism due to a secretory GH pituitary macroadenoma, was risking blindness due to the compression that the tumor exerted on the optical pathways.

The timely mediation intervention of the Ministry of Health and the Italian Embassy in Algeria, allowed the transfer of the patient to Italy and access to the Fabrizio Spaziani hospital in Frosinone where he was immediately taken care of.

The highly technically complex intervention was performed endoscopically through a transnasosphenoidal approach with complete decompression of the optical pathways.

The operation was perfectly successful.

Thanks to the close and continuous collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the Neurosurgery UOC of the Spaziani Hospital in Frosinone is also open to requests for humanitarian aid for non-EU patients in need of care.
