Lumbar spine pathology: first cases of patients treated with a transpsoas mini-invasive lateral approach (XLIF) at the Spaziani Hospital in Frosinone

First cases of transpsoas mini-invasive lateral approach (XLIF) at Spaziani Hospital in Frosinone for the treatment of degenerative pathology of the lumbar spine.

To perform them in complete autonomy, after adequate training and collaboration at the Galeazzi in Milan, the team of the Neurosurgery UOC directed by Dr. Giancarlo D’Andrea assisted by the project managers Dr. Placido Bruzzaniti and Dr. Veronica Picotti. The operations were very successful.

The technique allows to further improve the range of therapeutic possibilities for patients for a pathology that has long been treated at Spaziani with a minimally invasive and percutaneous approach, a technique that allows to have less blood loss and shorter hospital stay.

So an important novelty to deepen which we go into in detail with Dr. Giancarlo D’Andrea.

Whatis XLIF?

XLIF is a technique that involves a mini-invasive lateral approach and a surgical corridor through the psoas muscle, generally on the left side, with continuous monitoring of the neurophysiological potentials in the limbs to avoid damaging the lumbar plexus. Follows, with percutaneous technique, the posterior arthrodesis at the affected levels.

It is very satisfactory from the point of view of the neuroradiological results with recovery of the physiological lumbar lordosis, bilateral foraminal decompression, decompression of the indirect lumbar canal and correction of the coronal deformity.

What are the benefits for the patient?

Among the benefits of this technique is that of minimising muscle damage and blood loss, but what has affected us most favourably is the reduction of pain in the post-operative period and the rapid return of the patient to a normal life. Lumbar spine surgery requires a circumferential approach and our team possesses the professionalism that allows us to choose the best approach based on the characteristics of the patient’s spine.

The UOC of Neurosurgery guarantees treatments of the highest level

This is absolutely true! Our Complex Operating Unit, maintaining as its mission the treatment of intracranial diseases, offers the possibility of having spinal surgery treatments of the highest level with consolidated standards that are at the same level as the best national and international centers. There are no reasons to date for users in the province of Frosinone to travel for brain or spinal neurosurgery treatments and this is confirmed by the number of patients who rely serenely on our Unit even for interventions of extraordinary complexity.
