Giving blood is an act of love that is more important than ever

Giving blood is a noble gesture of concrete solidarity, it means giving a part of oneself to those in urgent need, safeguarding life and contributing to the good of society.

Harvesting is more important than ever in the summer when stocks are downsizing. The invitation, therefore, is to donate before leaving for the holidays.

An important topic that we talk about with Dr. Carla Gargiulo Director of the UOC Service of Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine and Collection of Stem Cells of the Spaziani Hospital.

Dr. Gargiulo, how important is it to donate?

Self-sufficiency in blood and blood components is essential to ensure that all patients who need transfusion therapy, whether in hospital, outpatient or at home, are transfused without unnecessary waiting.

To date, blood is not a drug that can be produced but is the result of an act of civilization, ethics, and love for others.

Who can donate?

Everyone from 18 to 70 years old can donate, weighing over 50 kg and must be in good health. Before the collection, the donor is checked through a medical examination in which blood pressure values, heart rate and hemoglobin values are detected.

How does the withdrawal operation take place?

The person is placed on the cot in complete safety. After making the withdrawal and following an adequate rest period, a small refreshment is offered and if it is detected that the donor has no problems, the green light is given to leave the Donation Room.

Subsequently, all donors are issued the certificate in order to take advantage of the rest day and after 7-10 days the analyses are sent to the requested address.

All the material used is clearly disposable and therefore is carried out with the utmost quality and safety.

What are the benefits for the donor?

In addition to the gesture of solidarity that warms the heart and fills the soul, the donation is also an opportunity to carry out a complete check on your state of health.

In the event that there are altered values, the donor is invited to reappear in order to repeat the tests. In addition, once a year and at the request of the Transfusionist, a check-up ECG is carried out.

But it is also possible to donate only plasma to expand the donation offer for those who could not donate blood for low hemoglobin values.

What are the initiatives of the ASL?

First of all, for next June 27, a collection was organized open to all employees, as well as affiliated doctors and GPs, which will kick off a series of initiatives already planned throughout the territory dedicated to the entire citizenry. There will be many appointments that we will make known in the coming days.
